The 2022 season isn't finished yet for the Bob Jones University women's soccer team. After falling to Carolina University in the South Region Championship match on November 18, the Bruins received an at-large bid to compete at the NCCAA DI National Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida. The Bruins come into the tournament as the #7 seed.
Pool play of the NCCAA DI National Tournament kicks off Monday afternoon at the Austin-Tindall Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Florida. The semifinals will be played on Friday with the championship match taking place Saturday, December 3 at 4 p.m.
"We are grateful to the NCCAA and the DI national and regional chairs for awarding us an at-large bid to the DI national tournament and we will all be working hard to compete well and try to advance out of pool play," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "The players had an incredibly successful season despite falling short in our regional championship match but our strong performance during the regular season was recognized and helped us to earn another trip to the DI nationals. I couldn't be more proud of our players and for rising above some of the challenges we had this season. We haven't seen our best soccer yet and hopefully will put it all together at nationals."
The Bruins enter the tournament following the NCCAA DI South Region tournament in Columbia, South Carolina. After beating Columbia International 3-0 in the semifinal match, the Bruins battled to a 1-0 defeat to Carolina University in the championship contest.
Nine teams will make the trip to Florida representing six states. These teams will be divided into three groups as the first three days of competition will be pool play competition followed by the semifinals on Friday and the championship game on Saturday. The tournament seeding is as follows:
- #1 - Grace College (Winona Lake, IN)
- #2 - Roberts Wesleyan University (Rochester, NY)
- #3 - Trinity Christian College (Palos Heights, IL)
- #4 - Oakland City University (Oakland City, IN)
- #5 - Carolina University (Winston Salem, NC)
- #6 - Judson University (Elgin, IL)
- #7 - Bob Jones University (Greenville, SC)
- #8 - Columbia International University (Columbia, SC)
- #9 - Southwestern Christian University (Bethany, OK)
The Bruins will kick off the tournament with a 6 p.m. pool play game against #3 Trinity Christian College. The Trolls enter the national tournament with an 12-5-4 record after beating Judson University in a 3-1 overtime win in the NCCAA North Central Region Final on November 16. This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
BJU will finish up pool play on Tuesday by taking on #4 Oakland City University at 6 p.m. The Mighty Oaks come into the national tournament with a 9-5-2 overall record. BJU and Oakland City University met for the first time in the post-season last year on November 30, 2021. Last year, the Bruins fought for 90+ minutes but fell short as Oakland City scored the golden goal in overtime in the first game of the NCCAA DI National Tournament.
"We have some key injuries going into the tournament and will need the entire team to step way up in order to be successful,' said Carmichael. "We know it's a privilege to represent BJU and will work hard to move into the semifinal round."
