Dr. Tony Miller Named South Region Coach of the Year

In his first season as the head coach of the Bruins men's basketball team, Dr. Tony Miller has been named the NCCAA DII South Region Coach of the Year.

"Coach Miller has been nothing but amazing coming into the head coaching role for our team this year," Assistant Coach Kenney Garrick Jr. said. "He's our leader and he instills so much confidence in our guys to go out and perform the way they do."

Miller spent the last 13 seasons as an assistant for Dr. Neal Ring and then Burton Uwarow, both of which have been given this honor. The patience has paid off as Miller has led this Bruins team in an incredible way this season. His competitive mindset gave his team a certain level of grit that they have had to use for several comeback wins this year. The most notable comeback win was against Trinity College of Jacksonville when the Bruins were down nine points with a minute and a half remaining.

One of Miller's first actions as head coach was to bring on former player Kenney Garrick Jr. as his assistant coach. Garrick Jr. has worked with the players' development all throughout the year and the coaching duo along with the supporting staff have led the Bruins to another good chance at a region title. Garrick Jr. shows his gratitude for Miller saying this: "Coming from a player role and now a coaching role, I look to him for advice and guidance not just from the basketball side of things, but life as well. I am beyong grateful for him and super proud of him."

So far, Miller has led the Bruins to a 12-6 overall record and 8-2 region record. Winning eight of the last nine games, the Bruins secured the #1 seed in the NCCA South Region Tournament. If they win another region championship, they will go compete in the national tournament for the third straight year.
